Bring the whole family for a fun-filled holiday party at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands at the annual Santa’s Pajama Party on Friday, December 12, or Saturday, December 13. Hosted by the Museum Youth Club of the education division, this event will be held from 6pm to 8pm on each evening. Advance reservations are required. Families will play holiday games, listen to stories, make winter crafts, sing seasonal songs, and visit with the live animals in the Exploration Station. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras to take pictures of their kids talking with Santa. “It’s even more fun when everyone wears pajamas, and I love to see the kids bring their favorite blankie or teddy bear to the party,” said Nancy Kirkwood, Museum Educator. Cost is $10 per person for each evening; under age 1 is free with paid adult. Each admission includes all holiday crafts and activities, meeting with Santa, and refreshments. Space is limited, and reservations with payment must be received at the museum by Wednesday, December 10. No refunds can be given for this special program, and no payments will be accepted at the party. For more information, call the museum’s education division at (909) 307-2669 extension 256, or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org for a reservation form.

Apple Butter Festival at Los Rios Rancho

Apple Butter Festival at Los Rios Rancho

Pioneer families made a custom of gathering together in late fall to cook up apple butter from the last apples of the season. It was a practical way to preserve the apples throughout the year and a pleasurable way to preserve community spirit. Our annual Thanksgiving weekend Apple Butter Festival celebrates this fine old tradition, and we invite families to come up and share in it. We’ll have a hands-on demonstration of apple butter making the old-time (and slow!) way – outdoors in a big copper kettle. Come learn how to “start the snitz” and “add the money,” plus enjoy pioneer crafts and games, music, carriage rides and lots more. At 6 p.m. on Saturday we'll cap off the evening just like our ancestors did – with a good old-fashioned hoedown, featuring music by Rileys Mountaineers. Chuckwagons will prepare a pumpkin stew on Saturday for the Apple Butter Hoedown. The chuckwagons will be using the apple butter we cook up to create their own unique dishes – come taste and vote on Sunday. Admission to the Festival is free; there are small fees for some activities. Apple Butter Hoedown admission is $25 for adults and $18 for children 3-12, and includes the pumpkin stew, served up in large Cinderella pumpkins.
